With its unique location and versatile space, we saw an opportunity to develop the Old Abbey Taphouse as a cultural hub-in-a-pub focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths (STEAM).
Its proximity to Manchester’s two main universities makes the it an ideal venue for innovative applied research and outreach projects. At the same time, it taps into the vibrant creativity and diversity of the Hulme area. We believe that bridging those two worlds through innovative projects, community-led events and a unique space can achieve real local benefit. Our work so far has created a unique space of learning at the heart of Hulme, attracting people of all ages and backgrounds, with events that span academic and community interest. Buildings represent more than bricks and mortar - they are the setting of many memories and stories spanning generations. The pub is the last remaining building of what was the Greenheys Estate and our beer garden is the former Victorian Road. We LOVE hearing about the history of the pub and have been lucky enough to hear stories from former residents, local historians and the family who had the pub for 30 years. If you have any stories regarding the pub or Greenheys estate please drop us an email at [email protected] |
